Just how long has it been since a band like Metallica has been a force in heavy metal? This is a question I asked myself over and over while watching Lamb Of God’s new DVD, Killadelphia. Metal is about slugging it out in the trenches side by side with your brothers, sometimes even bashing it out amongst one another in moments of tension. Killadelphia is a warts and all, good times with the bad, asskicker of a live DVD. Recorded live at the Trocadero in Philadelphia with backstage footage from various points on the road, this DVD is chock full of goodies to keep your DVD remote working overtime. The full concert on its own is worth the purchase price; superb filming and editing with a top-notch audio recording make this a video that will be returned to after more than just one or two viewings. Add in the two hours of extras that include backstage footage, interviews, commentary from the band and director, music videos, plus a few Easter Eggs hidden away for you to find and you’ve got enough to keep your speakers blasting. Kudos to director Doug Spangenberg for capturing life on the road with a touring band; the band comments on Doug’s “fly on the wall” ability in capturing footage, especially during moments of tension within the band. Also impressive is Lamb Of God’s willingness to allow parts of this footage to make the final cut, many bands would be scared shitless to show fans behind the curtain. Not so here, the unflinching honesty of life on the road raises Killadelphia head and shoulders above standard live video releases. No touchy-feely psychotherapy sessions or twelve step mumbo-jumbo here, while bands like Metallica are getting in touch with their inner issues and worrying about stopping recording sessions by 5:00 pm so as not to damage their fragile psyches, Lamb Of God blows by them at 200mph, flying the flag for the new generation of metal.
